Regular readers of The Watch Lounge will no doubt be familiar with the name URWERK. The super high-end, independent watchmaker has featured regularly on the site and has been, and continues to be, one of our longest supporters. Their futuristic looking timepieces are instantly recognizable both by their distinctive style and inherent complexity, with each progressive model further pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity.

That being said, thanks to their highly limited production numbers (and equally high price tags – more on that later) it is not often you spot an URWERK in the wild, a fact that makes them just that much more desirable for serious collectors and aficionados alike. Thanks to an incredibly trusting Communications Manager however, I was fortunate enough to spend the last few weeks with a superb UR-110 ST strapped to my wrist as I went about my daily business in the bustling city of London. Here are my thoughts from the experience.

Late last year TWL favorite URWERK announced the release of what is arguably their most mind-blowing piece to date – no small feat for a brand that has spent the last decade pushing the outer boundaries of haute horology. The incredible UR-210 Maltese Falcon combines cutting edge technology with futuristic good looks and somehow does it all whilst still providing one of the most legible, ‘non-traditional’ time displays on the market.

URWERK UR-202

You know you’re doing something cool when Jackie Chan requests your watch personally to feature in his next movie. Not surprising then that he chose URWERK and their futuristic looking UR-202 AlTin to adorn the wrists of the ‘good guys’ in his latest production, Chinese Zodiac.

In fact he likes them so much that he was photographed at the Beijing movie launch with one still strapped to his wrist! Now we can not only compliment Mr Chan on his amazing martial art abilities but also his excellent taste in watches!

Wow Watch Wednesday: The URWERK UR-210 ‘Maltese Falcon’

URWERK UR-210

Energy. We all need it and, much like our mechanical wrist companions, we all need ways to both generate and store it. It is for this very reason therefore that the relationship between man and mechanical watch is an inherently intimate one. After all, without the physical movements of their owners, these tiny mechanical marvels would be doomed to a completely inanimate existence.

In recognition and celebration of this special relationship, URWERK has created the UR-210, an incredibly intuitive timepiece that communicates with its owner in the most personalized way possible. In a world first the futuristic watchmaker has developed a mechanical complication capable of calculating the difference between the energy generated and the energy consumed by the mainspring over the last two hours. The outcome of this calculation is then reflected on the dial in the form of a winding efficiency indicator at 11 o’clock.

So what does that all mean?

Hautlence HL2.0

When it comes to ‘wow’ watches, the HL2.0 from Hautlence is definitely up there, which is why this is the second time we’re featuring it on Wow Watch Wednesday – this time with an updated video! Visually the timepiece is breathtaking, defying convention with its unusual design and the bold use of sapphire that lays bare the inner workings of this complex machine. And yet complex seems to be an understatement, not nearly doing justice to the groundbreaking movement that takes center stage every time the hour changes.  Of course, you don’t have to take my word for it, check out the amazing video from Hautlence after the jump and you can judge for yourself.
