Wow Watch Wednesday: Nord Zeitmaschine’s Variocurve (VIDEO)

Nord Zeitmaschine’s Variocurve

Like fine art, tastes in watchmaking are often extremely subjective. That’s why many of the larger brands spends millions of dollars each year researching and identifying current and emerging consumer trends to ensure that each new model has the best chance of success in its target market/s, and well they should, this is a multi-billion dollar business after all. Some watchmakers however, much like their artistic counterparts, create simply for the sake of creating. They are not so concerned with what’s popular as they are with realising their creative vision for a unique timepiece. The Variocurve from Nord Zeitmaschine falls decidedly into this latter category.

Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars ChronAP

It may not be quite as complicated as some of their minute-repeater or tourbillon pieces but this gorgeous COSC certified chronometer from Audemars Piguet’s Jules Audemars collection certainly looks the part. First introduced in 2009, the ChronAP is powered by the in-house Calibre 2908, a high-frequency movement that beats at 43,200 vibrations per hour and features a lubrication free escapement.

Tag Heuer MikrotourbillonS

In many ways, high-end watchmaking is a lot like Formula One. Just as the cutting edge technology developed for high-speed racing eventually filters down to mainstream production, so too do the mind-blowing concepts explored in the world of haute horology. For example Cartier’s ID One and Two concept pieces, both inspired by the desire to make mechanical watches more efficient, have resulted in improvements that have or soon will find their way into the brand’s various product lines.

Still, as impressive as the advancements made by Cartier are, they almost pale in comparison to what Tag Heuer has been working on. I am of course referring to the MikrotourbillonS, a mechanical timepiece so advanced it will make your head spin – though nowhere near as fast as the actual tourbillon itself (it’s the world’s fastest in case you didn’t know). That’s not even the most impressive part though, try wrapping your head around this: the MikrotourbillonS is the first ever tourbillon on a 1/100th of a second chronograph that can be started and stopped. Check out the video below courtesy of Alex Doak to see what I’m talking about (it’s a bit shaky but you get the idea):

Hautlence HL2.0

When it comes to ‘wow’ watches, the HL2.0 from Hautlence is definitely up there, which is why this is the second time we’re featuring it on Wow Watch Wednesday – this time with an updated video! Visually the timepiece is breathtaking, defying convention with its unusual design and the bold use of sapphire that lays bare the inner workings of this complex machine. And yet complex seems to be an understatement, not nearly doing justice to the groundbreaking movement that takes center stage every time the hour changes.  Of course, you don’t have to take my word for it, check out the amazing video from Hautlence after the jump and you can judge for yourself.

Today we take a look at another piece from this superb new collection, the Witness One Tourbillon.
