Seiko Ananta SD Chrono

Those great guys over at Seiko are at it again. To help promote their new “Ananta” collection the well-know Japanese brand has recently launched an online video contest giving Seiko owners around the world the opportunity to showcase just how important their Seiko watch is to them.

I Love My Seiko!
The contest is cleverly titled “I love my Seiko” and invites participants to present a short video on such topics as:

  • Why they love the style of their watch; or
  • How they use the timepiece’s technology; or
  • Whether the watch is a cherished family heirloom.

Please note, however, that all videos are to be between 15 and 45 seconds long so don’t go sending in reels and reels of you and your favorite timepiece!

Judging
All the best videos received will be combined into one long medley which Seiko will be air on their dedicated YouTube channel. Specially appointed Seiko judges will be given the heavy responsibility of choosing the best submission and awarding them the main prize, which is…

an automatic chronograph worth $3,200 from the brand’s new “Ananta” collection!!

The Ananta Collection
The new Ananta Collection is a 10-watch line which has been inspired by Katana swords, the trademark weapon of choice for Samurai warriors for many thousands of these years. These swords are highly collectable and no doubt the new Ananta line will prove just as popular.

Each watch is powered by a high-grade mechanical movement, and the side of each case features the distinctive Katana curve. To give the case that stunning mirror finish Seiko has used a three-stage “blade” polishing process.

The Ananta line is due to slash through stores this October.

The Final Word
A great prize for a great competition so don’t delay as time will very shortly run out! Entrants to the “I love my Seiko” contest should submit their videos to ilove@seiko-watch.co.jp by Aug. 30, 2009. More details are available at Seiko’s YouTube channel, Youtube.com/ILoveSeiko.

I didn’t know Seiko had an expensive line of watches like this. Is this the first lot of higher end watches they are doing?

  2. Tom Mulraney says:

Hi rolexwrist, thank you for your comment. Although Seiko is better known for the watches it makes for the lower to mid-range market, in more recent years it has made a more concerted effort to bring into $1000 – $5000 price range with the above being an example of this. Depending on who you talk to the brand has had varying degrees of success in this area and I think only time will tell if they are able to compete at this level.

  3. This is an interesting topic. I wonder whether the name Seiko will be their biggest set back? Sure it has a great reputation but that reputation isn’t really associated with more expensive watches. I wonder why they didn’t give the higher end ranges another name?

  4. rolexwrist says:

How can they change the name of their brand? That would completely undo all the work they have done as Seiko….

  5. Tom Mulraney says:

Actually Ramsay I think its quite the opposite. Whilst the mainstream market knows Seiko as a relatively low to mid-range brand due to the high volume of cheaper watches it produces, among Japanese watch enthusiasts it is actually one of the most popular and well renowned brands in the world.

Not many people realise but the company has an incredibly rich history and has been making clocks since 1892 with the first watches appearing under the Seiko name in 1924. The company single-handedly brought the Swiss watch world to its knees during the 1970s when it introduced the world’s first quartz movement production watch. They are known for being pioneers in the industry and are one of the few wristwatch manufacturers that produce all of their watches and movements entirely in-house.

However, in my opinion the collectability and value of Seiko watches is driven by the bold innovations they encompassed at the time of their original release. In this instance I’m just not sure if I’m entirely convinced that the Ananta range has that same appeal although they are exceptional looking watches.

  6. G’day Tom.

Now that is interesting. I certainly don’t feel that watch history from their marketing efforts here in Australia. It seems that everywhere they are stocked or promoted seems to be for the cheaper stuff.

    Great reply Tom. Thanks!

This has long been a problem for Seiko enthusiasts such as myself, Ramsay. A significant number of the more high-end watches made by Seiko are never sold outside of Japan or Asia and so rarely make it to Australian shores. That’s why our perception of the brand is quite different. Fortunately for diehards like myself ebay has proved a useful source for hard to find watches.

You couldn’t be more right SeikoLover but fortunately thanks to the advent of the internet the rest of the world doesn’t have to miss out!
