It’s hard to believe but the 2016 Summer Olympics are now only 2 years away. To mark this milestone Omega has unveiled the new Speedmaster Mark II RIO 2016.
The Speedmaster Mark II RIO 2016
Although World Cup is over now there is no respite in sight for host Brazil, who are now busily preparing for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio. Despite an incredible amount of international pressure and mounting concerns that the country was not capable of hosting an event of such magnitude, the Brazilians were able to restore some confidence in their abilities with their successful performance at the World Cup (well, off the field at least!)
Omega meanwhile will be serving as the official timekeeper of the Olympics Games for the 27th time, leaving little doubt that they will be more than up to the challenge. To celebrate this fact the watch manufacturer has created a special edition of the recently launched Speedmaster Mark II, which you no doubt already know was inspired by the 1969 model of the original Omega Speedmaster Mark II.
Presented in a slightly elongated steel case paired with a subdued black dial, the Speedmaster Mark II RIO 2016 is one of the more subtle limited edition ‘Olympic’ watches we’ve seen from Omega in a while. In fact the only reference you will find on the dial is the fact that the sub-dials are decorated with a bronze ring, 18K yellow gold ring and 925 silver ring respectively – a design that Omega says recalls the medals awarded to Olympic champions.
Turn the watch over however and things become a little more overt. The screw-in caseback is stamped with the logo of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and is engraved with “Si14”, “Column Wheel” and the limited edition number of the wristwatch – only 2,016 pieces of this model will be produced. Inside is the OMEGA calibre 3330, which is equipped with a Si14 silicon balance spring and a Co-Axial escapement with three levels. Best of all, Omega is so confident in its workmanship that every is offered with a full four-year warranty.
The Speedmaster Mark II “Rio 2016” is water resistant to 10 bar (100 metres / 330 feet) and is offered in a special presentation box with a certificate of authenticity. Each piece is individually numbered and will retail for US$6,500.
