Richard Mille RM 030 Black Night Limited Edition – Clarity Through Simplicity

Earlier this week Richard Mille announced that the third installment in the Black Night Limited Edition series would soon be available for purchase at selected RM retailers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. The decision follows the warm reception received by the two previous models, the Black Night RM 010 and RM 016, and this time sees the ever-popular RM 030 get the Black Night treatment.
RM 030 Black Night Limited Edition
Limited to just 25 pieces worldwide, the new RM 030 Black Night shares the same color-scheme as its predecessors, namely black with red highlights. The titanium case has received the black DLC treatment, whilst the dial ring, the tip of the second hand, the declutchable rotor indicator and power reserve indicator have all been hit with splashes of red to create quite a striking contrast. As with most Mille pieces however, it really is debatable as to whether this new color scheme makes the dial any more legible. It definitely looks cool though!
Powering the Black Night is the calibre RMAR1, an automatic movement that features Mille’s declutchable rotor system. According to the brand this system ensures that the winding barrel is automatically disconnected from the rotor’s winding mechanism at the moment when the spring is fully wound, thus ensuring the longevity and accuracy of the movement. As an added bonus this new mechanism has been linked to the power reserve indicator to provide optimal winding control.
The RM 030 Black Night Limited Edition is presented on a black rubber strap complete with a black DLC-treated buckle. No word on pricing as yet, unfortunately.
The Final Word
As we’ve said before Richard Mille timepieces aren’t for everybody, and especially not those people who like to read the time with a subtle glance at their wrist. That being said I have to say I am really digging this Black Night version of the RM 030. Not only do I love the black and red color scheme, I also think that it makes the dial a lot easier to read than the original. Plus I’m sure there’s more than a few Miami Heat fans out there thinking to themselves that this is slightly more appealing than Hublot’s “all-white” alternative…
