Urwerk Shines Bright With The UR-110 ZRN Champagne Supernova

Today Urwerk announced a new edition to its highly coveted “rare species” collection, unveiling a rather special edition of the UR-110 (a fascinating timepiece we covered in some detail here) which has been coated with Zirconium Nitride. Also referred to as the Champagne Supernova due to its unique coloring (and the brand’s connection to space and astronomy) this Édition Spéciale will be available in a limited run of just 12 pieces worldwide and can only be acquired exclusively from Chronopassion (Paris), Marcus (London), The Hour Glass (Singapore) and Westime (Los Angeles).
Zirconium Nitride?
Right now you’re probably scratching your head and asking yourself, “what the heck is Zirconium Nitride?” Good question! According to Urwerk ZrN is a champagne-colored high-performance ceramic machine tool coating which, while only a few microns thick, is very hard (2000 Vickers); provides excellent scratch, wear, and corrosion resistance; and exhibits good lubricity and ductility. As a result it is commonly used for coating medical devices and aerospace components.
Whilst the case of the UR-110 is constructed from titanium it has also been fitted with a sandblasted steel bezel and it is on this that the ZrN coating has been vapour-deposited, providing the timepiece with a distinctive frosted pale gold effect.
To make sure you can tell which one is yours should the unlikely occur and you cross paths with another one of the remaining 11 owners each individual timepiece can be identified by a red satellite hour numeral.
The Final Word
If you have been thinking about adding a UR-110 to your collection but have been waiting for something extra special then this might be your chance as they don’t get much rarer than this. Don’t take too long deciding though because with only 12 pieces available worldwide it won’t be too long before they’re all gone!
