Wow Watch Wednesday: Glashütte Original Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition

This week we profile the new limited edition Senator Moon Phase from German watchmakers Glashütte Original. Although not overly complicated the level of hand finishing on this skeletonized timepiece is superb, resulting in a sophisticated and elegant timepiece that is undeniably eye-catching.
A New Classic
Based on an earlier GO model from about a decade ago – the 1845 Classic Up/Down with Moon Phase – the new Senator Moon Phase features a similar dial arrangement to its predecessor, including moon phase, power reserve and hour/minutes/small seconds indicators, but that’s where the similarities end. Unlike the 1845 Classic, the dial of this special limited edition has been almost completely skeletonized, exposing the beautifully decorated manual wind GO manufacture Caliber 49-13 underneath.
Of course it’s not just the dial-side that has received special attention from Glashütte’s team of extremely talented artisans. Turn the timepiece over and the sapphire case-back reveals a breathtaking view; hand-engraved plates, screw-mounted gold chatons with blued steel screws, winding wheels with double-sunburst decoration, this is German craftsmanship at its finest.

Presented in a 42mm red-gold case with a matte black Louisiana alligator strap with fold-over clasp, the Glashütte Original Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition is a limited edition of just 100 pieces and comes in a highly polished, dark brown wooden case.
The Final Word
For me it is the relative simplicity of this timepiece that makes it so attractive. The use of traditional techniques, combined with incredible attention to detail, immediately draws the eye to the dial without being overpowering and most importantly of all, unlike many other skeletonized models, all the key indications can still be easily read. They don’t call it German efficiency for nothing.
