It’s that time of the week again where we bring you some of our favorite stories from around the web, so get busy reading!
Made In America
For those of you reading outside of the US, last Friday – the 4th of July – was Independence Day, the annual celebration marking the anniversary of America’s publication of its declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776. Fittingly, the team over at Quill & Pad chose this occasion (well, technically the day before) to bring us a great write up on the resurgence of watchmaking in America. The article provides some very interesting background on the craft’s rich history in the country before turning the spotlight on the individuals and companies successfully reinvigorating the local watchmaking community with a mix of innovation, ingenuity and good old fashioned elbow grease.

ORIS Aquis Depth Gauge

I think it’s fair to say most of us enjoy a nice looking dive watch, even if we never have any plans to go diving ourselves (let alone wear our precious watches in the water.) That being said, there are dive watches and then there are dive watches. The new Oris Aquis Depth Gauge most definitely falls into the latter category, but don’t just take my word for it. Jason Heaton, dive watch expert over at Hodinkee took the Aquis out for a real life road test in the Caribbean and has written up a great review about his experience (plus included some gorgeous photos!)

Richemont
Last week we featured Part 1 of an interesting write up by the team over at DreamChrono on the luxury watch conglomerates. That article focused on the Swatch Group and the Swiss company’s rise to dominance. Now it’s time to turn the microscope on the South African owned Richemont, another powerful player in the luxury watch industry that counts Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC and Cartier as just a few of the well-known brands in its stable. Did you know though that at least some of the company’s incredible success is attributable to tobacco products?

Blancpain L-Evolution R Chronographe Flyback Grande Date
If you’re anything like me, when you think of the name Blancpain you think elegant, refined looking timepieces steeped in tradition. However the brand also has a bold, sporty side that we perhaps don’t get to see quite as often as we would like. To wit, the Blancpain L-Evolution R Chronographe Flyback Grande Date, a hi-tech race watch that really stands out from the crowd. The guys at A Blog To Watch spent a bit of time this past week getting a little better acquainted with the watch and suffice to say they were not disappointed (and neither were we!)

Arnold & Son TES Tourbillon
From a hi-tech racing watch to something a little more classic looking, over here at The Watch Lounge last week we spent some time getting hands on with the gorgeous Arnold & Son TES Tourbillon. Officially unveiled at Baselworld 2014, the TES Tourbillon is a limited edition timepiece that once again reminds us why we love this young brand so much. Although relatively simplistic in both its design and function, the watch is nothing short of breathtaking in its execution and certainly warrants a closer look, even if it is just a longing one.
