Rolex continues its domination of #VintageWatchFridays this week, this time in the form of a pristine Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6263 from 1972.
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6263
There are few watches that elicit more of an emotional response from collectors than a good quality Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. There’s just something about these watches, be it their the rich history, timeless design or simply the fact that they are just stone cold cool, everybody wants at least one vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in their collection.
The model we are showing you today however has a particular allure to it, in that it has what is commonly referred to as a ‘tropical’ or ‘chocolate brown’ dial. The photos don’t really do it justice but effectively what this means is that this particular Cosmograph Daytona started off life with a black dial but over the years it has faded to a nice rich brown color.
The contrast this creates with the applied baton numerals with luminous accents, as well as the luminous hands, is really quite delightful to look at, giving the watch a very unique style. It works so well together however that those who don’t know any better will probably just assume that it started out life with a brown dial.
This effect is accentuated by the fact that this particular Cosmograph Daytona has been paired with a supple brown leather strap (non-original) complete with an authentic Rolex silver buckle. As you can see the watch really stands out nicely on the wrist, wearing comfortably at 37.5mm.
That’s the good news, now for the bad. Unfortunately this tropical dial Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6263 is not available for immediate sale through Christie’s Private Watch sales. Instead it will be offered up for Auction by Christie’s in June here in New York, with an estimate of US$40,000 – $60,000.
On the upside that does give you a bit more time to save!
