Creative lab MB&F has just officially unveiled the latest addition to its wildly popular Legacy Collection; introducing the Legacy Machine 101.

The Legacy 101

According to MB&F the Legacy 101 is the most classic, purest Legacy variation to date, seeking to capture the very essence of the collection. As such it still features all the hallmarks that have made the Legacy collection so popular but offers them in a more distilled, subdued setting.

The design of the dial remains familiar, in the sense that it still has two small sub-dials – one for the time and the other for the power reserve – however a new configuration ensures that even more attention is focused on the hypnotizing balance wheel suspended over the top.

This new lay-out of the dial is made possible by the fact that the watch is powered by the first MB&F movement ever conceived entirely in-house. That’s right, although it may look superficially similar to its siblings, the Legacy Machine 101 actually houses a completely new, manual-wind calibre offering 45 hours of power in reserve.

As with previous models the aesthetics and finishing of the movement has been left to the talented Kari Voutilainen and you can view his handiwork through domed sapphire exhibition case back.

What is perhaps most appealing about the new Legacy Machine 101 however is the size. Unlike the Legacy Machine 1 & 2, which both use the same 44mm diameter case, the case size of the new model is just 40mm wide x 16mm high, perfect for those with smaller wrists or who simply just don’t like wearing big watches.

The smaller size also opens up the Legacy Machine 101 to a whole new market; women. As you can see in the picture below, it sits beautifully even on the most delicate and slender wrists and really looks great. It’s not overpowering in any way but it is definitely eye-catching.

Personally though I still prefer the Legacy Machine 1 from an aesthetic view point however I think would feel far more comfortable wearing the Legacy Machine 101 on a regular basis. It easily slides away under your cuff when you want to be discreet plus it’s easy to read at a glance thanks to the clever placement of the primary sub-dial.

The Legacy Machine 101 will not be limited in production however MB&F expects to only produce about 30 pieces a year in each of 18k white and rose gold, which undoubtedly will sell out fast. Completing the look is a black or brown hand-stitched alligator strap with gold tang buckle to match case.
